Nearly 95 percent of the private sector workers in America do not belong to a union! So as we observe Labor Day this year, with Donald Trump enjoying a significant amount of support from blue collar workers here in the Midwest, let’s step back and re-evaluate who the term “labor” actually represents when it is used today, as opposed to what the term meant nearly 100 years ago, and how it has been hijacked by politicians, union bosses and the mainstream media in the decades since the “labor movement” of the early 1900s changed America.
That was when workers had to organize and elect leaders to represent them in “collective bargaining” negotiations with owners and members of management to force large private corporations to provide health insurance and retirement benefits to their workers. It would be hard to find someone today who would deny that those types of changes were needed at the time, or that they have helped create the large “middle class” that America now enjoys. To most blue-collar workers of the 1900s, unions were sacrosanct. That was then!
And when the term labor is now used by the mainstream media, they want you to think of those struggles; but in the 21st century, labor unions increasingly represent not lower-class underpaid workers who are being abused by greedy employers, but instead members of the middle and upper-middle class, who are frequently college educated and among the top 20 percent of wage earners in the country.
And in fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 nearly half of all union members worked for the government. Public sector workers (those paid with your tax dollars) are five times more likely to belong to a union than private sector workers.
Today union bosses want “more” political power, and use workers’ dues almost exclusively to serve the Democrat party. In 2014, UAW bosses increased the number of dues taken from members by 25 percent, in spite of overwhelming opposition from workers, who are now hired in at a lower wage.
What has been done by union bosses over the decades since labor unions helped get federal legislation such as The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 passed has not always further advanced the cause of American workers and Americans in general, especially since 1959, when Wisconsin became the first state to allow collective bargaining by public sector employees.
Unions used to fight for the workers, but now union bosses increasingly use workers to fight to increase the union’s disproportionate political power and influence in Washington! According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 90 percent of workers in America do not belong to a union, and nearly half of all workers have an unfavorable opinion of unions, yet they are one of the most powerful and influential groups in Washington, D.C.
Many union members are looking to Donald Trump’s candidacy this year to return the power to American workers and bring jobs back to America that left after bad trade deals, including NAFTA, which was signed by union-endorsed President Clinton. Hillary Clinton has been endorsed by the UAW here in Detroit in spite of having supported NAFTA and the TPP.

The TPP will push wages down! As it stands, the TPP encourages outsourcing of jobs to countries with low wages, inadequate labor rights and poor environmental standards.
There are only weak mechanisms to enforce labor rights! The TPP allows too much discretion in the enforcement of labor rights.
Workers who petition the government may not see results for several years, if at all! Meanwhile, foreign investors can act independently to enforce their rights. Currency manipulation could wipe out any potential tariff reduction benefits.
The administration has failed to include enforceable currency rules in the TPP! This means that U.S. manufacturers, hoping to increase exports, could continue to face closed markets and increasing import competition from products subsidized by countries with undervalued currencies.
Foreign investors will be able to bypass the American court system!
Investor-to-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) will allow foreign companies to bypass American courts and file suit against laws and regulations they believe will interfere with their expected profits. Countries outside the TPP, namely China, will be able to write the rules of trade without joining. For example, weak rules of origin for automobiles mean that China and other non-TPP countries will be able to benefit from the TPP’s tariff reductions even if they don’t follow any of the TPP’s rules. SCARY BONUS: The administration has been characterizing the TPP without showing the public the factual basis for its claims. The lack of transparency is more “Mirrors” than it is “Alice Through the Looking Glass. “This is a bad deal for America's working families.
